The purpose of this thesis is to initiate a discussion about how much of the violence that currently exists within the sport is a natural aspect of how the game is played, and how much of the violence is a manufactured creation, initiated by the rapid evolution of the business of professional athletics in our society. Three aspects of this topic are discussed in order to frame the issue, and explain its reach in the sport, and in culture at large. These aspects are how violence in hockey is enabled, how it is promoted, and how it occurs. A critical journal, accompanied by supporting material, is presented in an exhibition environment meant to reference a locker room setting, a visual language used in the world of sport to glorify and celebrate athletic achievements, but not typically a setting where honest critical discussions are initiated.
